About Hearing Loss
It's estimated that 20 million American adults report some type of hearing loss. About a third of people aged 65 and older experience hearing loss. It is a condition that can happen progressively over time, because of general aging, or suddenly due to some sort of trauma, like an injury to the head. There are four different levels that doctors diagnose: mild, moderate, severe and profound hearing loss (total deafness).

Causes
The two top causes of hearing loss in adults are exposure to loud noises and the natural process of aging. If you live in a very noisy city location, like to listen to music very loud on your headphones, or stand too close to a loud speaker, you could be at risk of some level of hearing loss. People who serve in the military and are exposed to gunfire or explosions are also more prone to hearing problems. As for aging, the inner ear tissue breaks down over time, causing mild to severe loss of hearing. Consult your Highland ear nose and throat doctor to narrow down what may be the cause of your condition.

Treatments
Though some forms of hearing loss are permanent and can’t be reversed, some cases can be treated. If the problem is due to an infection in the ear, it may be resolved by clearing it and taking antibiotics. In other cases, a surgical procedure may be necessary remove or add tissue. Hearing aid devices may be prescribed to improve your ability to hear.
